Does your small business actually need a website in 2025?

Social media is free and easy, so why bother with a website? Here's the honest answer.

Most Irish small businesses we talk to are already on Instagram or Facebook. Some are doing genuinely good work there, posting regularly, replying to DMs, building a small community. So a fair question lands on our desk every week: do I really need a website on top of that?

The short answer

Yes, but probably not for the reason you think. A website isn't there to replace social media. It's there to do the things social media can't: show up on Google when someone searches "plumber near me", give first-time customers a place to confirm you're real, and turn casual interest into actual enquiries.

What you lose without one

When a potential customer hears your name from a friend, the first thing they do is search you on Google. If nothing comes up, or only a half-empty Facebook page from 2019, they assume you're either out of business or not serious. You don't get a chance to explain. They scroll to the next result, and that result is a competitor who has a clean, simple site that loads in under two seconds.

What a website actually does for you

It works while you sleep. Even a five-page site with clear services, real photos, and a contact form will quietly bring in enquiries every week: from people who would never have messaged you on Instagram. It also gives you somewhere to send people: every quote, every business card, every Google ad needs a destination.

What you don't need

You don't need 30 pages, a blog you'll never update, or a fancy animated hero. You need clear messaging, mobile-first design, fast load times, and an obvious way to get in touch. That's it. Anything beyond that is a bonus, not a requirement.

Our take

If you're running a business in Ireland in 2025 and you don't have a website, you're losing customers you'll never even know about. The good news: a proper site doesn't have to cost thousands or take months. Done well, it pays for itself inside a few months and keeps earning quietly after that.
