Should your website have an AI chatbot?

Chatbots have got genuinely good. Here's where they help Irish businesses, and where they quietly annoy customers.

A few years ago website chatbots were mostly a nuisance: a pop-up that asked "how can I help?" and then failed to answer anything. That's changed. A modern AI assistant trained on your own services, prices and opening hours can handle a real share of the questions you're answering by phone every day.

What they're genuinely good at

Opening hours, service areas, rough pricing, parking, whether you cover a particular town, what to bring to an appointment. These are the questions that interrupt your day and never turn into anything. A chatbot answers them instantly at 11pm on a Sunday and quietly captures a name and number while it does.

What they're bad at

Anything that needs judgement: quoting a complex job, handling a complaint, or discussing something sensitive. A good setup knows its limits and hands over to a human with the conversation attached, rather than looping the customer in circles.

The rules that make them work

Train it only on your real content. Keep the greeting subtle, not a full screen takeover. Always offer a "talk to a person" option. And make sure it collects contact details before the conversation ends, otherwise you've answered a question and lost a lead.

What it costs you if you skip it

Most enquiries happen outside business hours. If nobody replies until the next morning, a good portion of those people have already contacted a competitor. A chatbot isn't about replacing you, it's about not going silent for 14 hours a day.

Our take

For service businesses fielding the same handful of questions daily, an AI assistant is one of the cheapest lead capture upgrades available. For businesses with complex, bespoke work, use it purely as a triage and booking tool.
